I admit, I'm a somewhat of a telecom geek, I've enjoyed being in and around telecom for most of my life. My dad was a central office switch tech for 30 years with A&T/Bell Atlantic/Verizon.
Occasionally our home would get a call in the middle of the night to fix a "trouble". Like most kids I wanted to be like my dad, I would wake up after hearing the call and beg my dad to take me with him to fix the "trouble". We’d hop in the car in the middle of the night and drive to the central office.
This cement building with no windows, filled with clickity clacking switches and bundles of colored wires was pretty cool to a kid in the single digit age range. I’d run over to the teletype machine and look at the printout. My dad would then tell me what the "trouble" was, and then we’d go around and around the rows of switches, up and down a ladders, all the while my dad would be snipping here and pulling wires there, then whamo, the "trouble" was fixed and we were on our way home.
And Now?
Well I’m now entering my 20th year in telecom. I still enjoy getting the opportunity to fix a “trouble”, but "trouble" these days comes in much more complex forms. We still use wires, but we've added fiber and lightwaves, we still use switches, but we've added SIP and VoIP, and we still use phones, but most are wireless.
I now have three kids of my own, two small boys, which like me seem to enjoy technology, and a daughter in college that helps dad out with mobility sales when she's not in school.
I still think telecom is pretty cool, each day I try to find ways to help my clients better manage their telecom environment and all of its complexities.
